阿公

He watched me grew up.

Brought me to many places holding me in his hands when I was just a kid.
Went here and there running errands for 华星.

华星太极健身社 was his life and blood.
It's a lion dance troupe located on a 7 storey building's rooftop at Mayo Street.

Spent a great deal of time there during my childhood days.
阿公 will tend to his business and chores while I wondered around the rooftop entertaining myself with the blood stained punching bags and colorful lion/dragon heads.

Sometimes, we will print flags together in the manual old fashion silkscreen way.

阿公 has never ever scolded nor raised his voice at me even if I'm naughty or did something wrong.
Never...

After 阿嬷 passed away over 20 years ago, me and 阿公's bond grew stronger day by day.

I went through my teenage years in a rebellious fashion.
Went home with tattoes one day and it broke 阿公's heart.
Although he said nothing, I will never forget the disappointment in his eyes even till this day...

All he asked for was me to go back home in one piece, safe and sound... I think...

Still, I continued breaking his heart by getting into more troubles...

I'm sorry......

Years passed.
I grew up.
I was released from prison.
I've changed.

阿公 didn't know.
Everyone lied to him that his favourite grandson was posted overseas for army training during the period of my incarceration.
He was already diagnosed with heart disease at that time.

He has 9 children including my father, 10 grandchildren including myself.

I was practically an unwanted child back then.
Was it because I filled the void in his heart when 阿嬷 died?
Or was it because he took pity on me?
Till this day, I am still clueless......

3 days ago, 阿公 had another heart attack and was sent to the hospital.
Soon as I got the news, I took an early day off and rushed there.

He was in the ICU and smiled when he saw me.
He raised his left hand and I took it.

First thing he asked: 吃饱了没有?
After I answered, he said something in hokkien to my aunt with a gentle smile who was standing on the other side of the bed.
Something which he says to anyone whenever I'm with him on many occasions.

"An Nay Zui Soon, Xiang Tia Diu Si Didi Liao..."
So many grandchildren, I dote Didi the most...
Didi is me... I am forever his favorite Didi......

It was heartbreaking to see so many tubes sticking out of his body.

Heart functioning at only 35%.
Water in his lungs.
Kidney failing due to gradually declining blood pressure causing high level of acid in 阿公's blood.

Doctors unable to do much as 阿公's condition was simply too weak to withstand any kind of operation.

I already had a feeling that this time, he might not make it.
Still, deep down inside, I hoped for a miracle...

Hours passed.
His condition deteriorated.
Until to the point where he got slightly delusional...

Heartbeat stopped once but was pulled back by the doctors.
Heart efficiency dropped further to a mere 10%.

When I'm alone with him in the ward, I whispered to my unconcious 阿公 in his ear:
"弟弟长大了,也乖了,不会走回头路。阿公你放心去找阿嬷... 我这里以后做完了就可以下去陪你们。"

Yesterday morning at 1.50am, 阿公 left...

I was devastated...
Despite already being mentally prepared...
Even though everyone in the entire family knows that I'm 阿公's favorite, none of them will ever understand the degree of my pain.
Not a single one... No one in the entire world......

I left the hospital ward and walked downstairs.
I have a strong character but this time, I couldn't take it anymore...

I never knew that one can feel so much pain in one's heart and mind until yesterday.
Before, I thought that Billy's passing was the ultimatum.

I was so wrong......

Gathered myself, went back upstairs and made some phonecalls for 阿公's funeral.
Went to the mortuary and collected 阿公 together with the undertakers.
After all was done and my aunties and uncles went home, I went to the police station alone with 阿公's NRIC and doctor's certification to register his death.

Back to Ling's place at around 5plus...
Ling woke up and could only see my sadness superficially whereas Pepper seemed to sense the shattered man inside me...
Botak snuggled up to me affectionally pawing and pushing me with her furry muzzle.
I hugged her for awhile before I went to shower.
She knows and can feel that I was broken...

Showered, switched off the lights and lay down beside Ling in her pitch dark bedroom. Totally exhausted, I dozed.

Woke up about 2 hours later at 8am and booked the pavilion for 阿公's funeral wake.
Went to the undertaker's with pa, aunties and uncles.
The same undertaker was recommended by Ling who had engaged them for her dad's funeral years back.

We decided on the details with the boss, William.
I was the only grandson there.

My youngest aunt picked a nice light blue silk longevity robe with golden embroidery for 阿公 which I think he will like.

There are a few occasions in my life where I have suffered severe setbacks and heartbreaks...
But none can be compared to my 阿公's passing...
Maybe not even Billy's...

As always, I expertly conceal my tremendous grief...

世傑 will never break. 世傑 will be OK.

That's what others think......

Who can actually know the immense degree of pain that is inflicted on me this time?

Perhaps only Botak...
Or maybe Ah Boy...
Ling?

Just now at the wake, a dragonfly landed on my chest.
It then flew around the place circling 阿公's altar.
Landed on the joss stick butts for a short while before it disappeared as sudden as it came.

Is it you, 阿公?
Please forgive me for not being a better grandson......

Day of Extreme Fishing

Took leave yesterday and went daybreak fishing with Derek aka Mr Hook Finger at 5.30am.
We went to scout for a top secret spot at Neo Tiew Lane 2.
In fact, I went there about a month ago but failed to locate the spot.
Many in the local luring community knows about this highly productive spot somewhere at Kranji Reservoir but not all knows how to get there.

This spot has a unique landscape which is not found anywhere else in Singapore.
It's like a long endless thin strip of land in the middle of the water.
This spot is also home to many humongous giant snakeheads...
This spot is also highly dangerous not just because of the illegal trepassing aspect.
It is in fact, potentially life threatening...
Not recommended to go alone...

Reached Neo Tiew Lane 2 and after about a 20 minutes brisk walk, we found a 'path' with flattened bushes.
Followed the 'path' and entered the thick forest.
Bashing through the forest took us a further 15 minutes.
There are times when we lost the 'path' and took wrong turns.
But in the end, we made it through...
Came out of the vegetation and reached the 'gate'.

High security area
Bypassing the barb wire

The sides of the metal fence were laced with barb wires to prevent trespassers.
We went into the thigh-deep water and stepped onto the wires carefully making our way across.

Once we were on the other side, this 'welcome' sign greeted us...
To the unwary, this sign might seem to be a hoax.
A bluff to discourage any trespassers from advancing any further.

But I know that it's not...
Weeks ago, a frequent lurer at that spot had taken the below pic of an alligator sunbathing on the grass.

Estimated 3 metres freshwater alligator
I took this pic where the croc was apparently last spotted
The shadow of the 'tower' in the water look similar to the upper pic
These are BBC's signal towers

We saw some toman boils in the water.
These are actually baby giant snakeheads gathering in groups.
Their parents are bound to be within close proximity gurading their offsprings.
I attached a large lure and started casting over the school and retriving through the middle of the .
Some of the larger juvenile tomans whack my lure but since the hook size is big, it is unlikely to hook them.
My target is solely the parents...
Toman boil created by dozens of juvenile giant snakeheads gathering close to the surface

A few times, the parents will surface to take air.
They're HUGE...
One black and the other one watermelon...

I continued relentlessly disturbing their school of babies.
After countless casts, the parents are still not pissed!

Sibei Ho Lun... Very good tolerance level...
Time to change tactic...

I changed to a smaller lure and decided to fish up some of the juvenile to show the parents that I mean business.

Juvenile giant snakehead
It's stripes will slowly fade off as it grows older

This Peacock Bass is a bycatch

After about 2 hours of non-stop harassment, still no take from either parent even though I landed and released 4 of it's kids.
I starting to get pissed instead...

Saw a familiar yellow boat approaching boat in the distance.
PUB suckers again...

Derek and I waked back towards the direction where we came from and the boat passed us.
Maybe they decided to wait for us at the gate.

That's me leaving

Anyway, we left the place trekking back the same route which brought us here.

No sign of those PUB idiots all the way out.

About 2 months ago, news of 2 PUB officers were beaten up by some anglers at Neo Tiew are spreading across the fishing community.

Maybe it's true and those PUB guys have lost their balls??

Nonetheless, I'll be back here soon to exact my revenge...
Must photo rape at least one 12 pounder...
I then brought Derek to another secret spot of mine nearby.
It's inside the army's live firing area...
Small river just outside the live firing area
Reached the place, walked through a thick bush to tarmac.
While walking along the tarmac on the way to the water, an army jeep came from behind.
There was no time to hide.
It stopped and the army boy in the jeep told us that we're not allowed to come into this area.
We turned back when we're quite certain that he's not going to arrest us.
That army boy bore an uncanny resemblance to Wan Song...
At least 90%. Voice also the same. Way they talked also the same slowish manner.
Called Ling and asked her if Wan Song is serving his reservist now but answer's a no.
Long lost twins?? Super lookalike!
But still, even if it's really Wan Song, I doubt that we will be allowed to fish there.
Went to Upper Pierce Reservoir.
Derek showed me a new spot about 30mins brisk walk from the carpark.
Super secluded jungle spot somewhere in the golf course area.
Fished for about 30 minutes standing ankle-deep in the water.
No action... We've long passed the golden hour...

Upper Pierce Golf Course

While on the way out of the reservoir compound, I spotted a colony of monkeys lazing around the road.

Snapped some cute family ones...

Snapped a rather rude one...

HAHAHAHAHA.........

Went back home to Ling a tired man...

Note to self:
NEVER bring a 1 piece rod to bashing spots again.

Sunday 7 October 2012

Day of Snakeheads!

Woke up 4.30am.
Reached Mandai at 6am.

A total of 3 giant snakeheads were caught.
All decently sized!

Let the pics do the talking:

First one

Second one

Third one
Still clamping down hard on my lure

Caught these 2 small temmies as well

Guess who I met?

Mr 'Hook Finger'...
His name is Derek and his finger healed.

He helped me took a picture before I released the fish back into the water...

Derek is surprised that I caught not 1 but 3 giant snakeheads this morning.
He wants to meet me next Sunday and we exchanged numbers.

This time round, he brought his pliers. lol
Lesson learned.
No more heroic japanese style of unhooking with barehands now, he said.

NRX is truly in a class of it's own...
It's not the ability to land big fishes.
It's the ability to transmit every single vibe at the end of the line back to the angler that is astounding...

Although 6' 8" is a tad too long for a luring rod, I got used to the extra inches pretty fast.

Sensitivity level beats all the other rods that I have at home hands down...

Went back home to Ling a happy man...

These 2 lures are actually both the same.
I bought 2 of them.

After the 3 giant snakeheads, look at what it became.
Bite and hook marks all over...
Original hooks are long gone and replaced with Gamakatsu.

This shows how toothy and aggressive those giant snakeheads are......

Scared.....

Blessing in Disguise??

Went Upper Pierce Reservoir this early morning.

This illegal spot was introduced to me by Dexter about 2 years ago.
I can still remember that he specifically told me that if I were to fish here, I must leave before 8am because that's the time when the PUB officers will come and catch anglers fishing illegally.

I arrived at 5.15am and this is what I saw at the entrace along Old Upper Thomson Road:

One of the countless stupid regulations made by those PUB idiots again...

What am I supposed to do in the middle of nowhere surrounded by trees and more trees in this eerie atmosphere?!

Wait lor what else...
Smoked, whipped out my new iPhone and played some games.
Smoked, read some new facebook entries.
Smoked, posted a comment on Pearl's facebook wall.
Smoked, played more games.

Smoked and smoked and smoked...

6.05am.
Went back to the gate and it's finally opened.

Relying on memories, I made my way to the spot.

Reached.
Started casting.
3 men came out of nowhere.

One of them took out a camera and took a picture of me from a distance.

They approached and declared their identity.
PUB bastards...

Why are they bastards? They're just doing their job right?

That's because you haven't seen the way they flaunt their authority before.
PUB kah kia acting like they are some sort of high ranking army officer or some police special agent.

Fuck you, PUB...
Educate your staff on basic manners before you start your pathetic attempt on educating folks like us on why fishing is bad for our reservoirs blah blah blah.

All bullshit...
Fucking rotting corpses are found at Bedok reservoir and you people can claim that the water is still safe for consumption.

Anglers luring for fish using artificial lures, you fucking accuse us of polluting our country's drinking water.

3 officers to nab me.
They must be scared now that news of 2 PUB officers are beaten up by anglers at Neo Tiew spot are spreading like wildfire among the luring community.

They took my particulars.
I left.
Met a group of uncles with fly fishing gear on my way out and I told them to drop the idea of going in today.
All U-turned.

I switched spot back to my trusty home ground, Mandai.

Cast and cast.
No fish...
Cast and cast again...
Still nothing...

Is it that this NRX is cursed that's why I kena PUB just now?
Is it that this NRX is cursed that's why nothing bites now?
Is it that this NRX is cursed that's why the previous owner sold it after his first usage?

A sudden forceful pull...
I set the hook...

FISH ON!

Landed it after awhile of the usual mad dashing and wild shakes.

60cm @ 8lbs
What a fatty!

Released
A kind chap took this photo for me

Got me my biggest and heaviest temensis to date!
The NRX is 500 dollars well spent!

Rod's sensitivity is insane.
With a fish at the end of the line, this rod transferred every single movement the fish makes back to my hand.

Went back home to Ling a happy man...

Gary Loomis

Gary Loomis... Commonly known as G.Loomis.

It's a brand of fishing rod based in the USA.
The entire brand and production plant was bought over by the dreaded Shimano some time ago...

G.Loomis fishing rods are like the Ferrari of cars, Vertu of cellphones, Louis Vuitton of luggage bags, Ling of women, BoyBoy of dogs...
Of course there are also a couple of other brands out there like Fenwick and St Croix which falls into the same grade as G.Loomis...

But each has their own cult following...
I got my used G.Loomis model: IMX MBR 785C from someone in a fishing forum slightly more than a year ago.
It's the best rod I've ever had until today...
Exciting to fish with owing to it's high sensitivity level.
Excellent casting and lure control owing to it's fast action rod tip.

G.Loomis IMX MBR-785C

Although the IMX was introduced slightly over a decade ago, it remains in production today.
This shows how much sought after and proven this rod is.

Then, came the NRX...
With it's premium price tag for a fishing rod, one could have chosen to custom make a top quality rod at a lower price.

G.Loomis NRX 804C

Then, why didn't I custom make a rod instead?
Well... Because I'm a fanboy of their rods, that's why...
There's only one tackleshop in SG that parallel imports the NRX model.
Yesterday, one of the staff called me and asked whether am I still interested in the NRX as they are starting to consolidate their next order.
If yes, a deposit will have to be made by this week.
Shipment will arrive in about 2 - 3 months time if nothing goes wrong...

I told him that I'll think about it and will go make the deposit if I want it...
And yes I did... Think and think and think and think...
Price versus sanity...
I have always dreamed of getting a NRX even before I got the IMX...
Ling persuaded me to go ahead and buy it if I like it this much.
She said that I rarely spend money on myself these days...
Makes sense...
Perfectly ok to indulge in a little treat for myself since I have been a very good boy lately...
And so, I decided to go make the deposit today after work.
While at the office, I made a last ditch effort to search for a second hand NRX online.
There are only a handful of NRX owners in SG and even so, the majority of them are using the lighter poundage version of the NRX (12-16lbs).
What I wanted was the 14-20lbs model...
This fact made the search next to impossible...
Anyway, I went ahead and posted my search at a popular forum with the local fishing community.
My post in FishingKaki forum.

6pm came...
No response from the post...
Left the office and started to make my way to the tackleshop to place my deposit...
SMS came shortly after I stepped out of my office...

JACKPOT!!!!  WOOHOOOO!!!!!!  YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Called that guy and he asked for my offering price.
He agreed.
Arranged a viewing session immediately and rushed to his place at The Florida condo near Hougang.

Lady Luck is still stalking me!
Reached, examined the NRX, exchanged fishing tales, walked to Hougang Mall to meet Ling and Wanyu with my new rod in my hand.

Kopi session with Ling and Wanyu.
Share fishing stories.
Thomas came for Wanyu.

Me and Ling went home.

New Vs Old
NRX Vs IMX
Both vying for my reels's attention

I'm surprised at how light the NRX feels in my hands. Seems kinda fragile...
Makes me wonder whether is it truly as strong as it claimed...

Well, only time can tell...
